El País is Spain's most widely read and internationally recognised paid newspaper. Its first edition was published shortly after the death of military dictator Francisco Franco. This centre-left daily provides comprehensive coverage of European and international issues. It takes a sceptical to hostile view of the newly founded left-wing party Podemos and the separatist movement in Catalonia.
