Republic was published under the name Slon until 2016 and was one of the first online magazines to make a name for itself in Russia. The full versions of most of its texts are accessible only to subscribers and are more like print magazine articles, both in length and style. The editorial structure is decentralized: Instead of departments, there are eleven "journals" with independent content and their own editors-in-chief.
