The unknown photographer

Warsaw Pact soldiers surrounded by citizens of Prague. Koudelka does not just observe but also participates in the events. Following the uprising he fled the country and started working under the abbreviation PP (for Prague Photographer) for the renowned Magnum Photos agency. It was only after his father died that people learned who had taken the photos, which today are regarded as classic examples of the photojournalism of the post-war period.

Middle East violence menaces Europe

The peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine are grinding to a halt, while missile attacks from the Gaza Strip, Israeli air strikes and the announced construction of new settlements in East Jerusalem have done much to poison the atmosphere. The maelstrom of violence will engender more terror and thus threaten Europe, commentators write.
