Poland's historic election campaign
The Poles will elect a new president on Sunday after former president Lech Kaczyński died in a plane crash in Smolensk. This makes for a historical election campaign, the conservative daily Polska writes: "The most bizarre election campaign in the history of the Third Polish Republic is drawing to an end. Regardless of whether there is a second ballot or not it's already clear that the presidential elections 2010 will go down in the annals of history. And not because they were hastily put forward as a result of the dramatic events in Smolensk, but because the heroes of the campaign were forced into roles entirely different to those foreseen for them. Only [the liberal candidate Bronisław] Komorowski was truly equipped for the campaign for the presidential office. He was the only one among the political leadership who had time to prepare for the battle for the - to put it in exaggerated terms - highest office in the state."

Poland's Left has a memory problem
The Polish opposition party Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) has accused the government of being ill-prepared for the current floods in the country. In the conservative daily Dziennik Kamil Durczok has a hard time swallowing that: "I must say I find it funny that the first people to start hurling accusations at the government are the Democratic Left Alliance. When I heard on Tuesday that the former minister and current deputy chairman of the SLD, Jolanta Szymanek-Deresz, wanted to ask the Civic Platform [the ruling party PO] why it had not done all it could to limit the damage despite the warnings, I immediately asked myself if the Left doesn't have major memory problems. Let's not forget that during the huge floods of 1997 the government in power at the time was totally unprepared for the crisis. And that was the government of Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz [of the SLD]. Back then it took people a lot longer before they started criticising the behaviour of the SLD."

Sarkozy's incriminating finger
Poland's President Lech Kaczyński has agreed to ratify the EU Reform Treaty in a meeting with his French colleague Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris. Television journalist Kamil Durczok nevertheless expresses annoyment at Sarkozy's dealings with Poland in a commentary for the Polish tabloid Fakt: "The mild tone of the communiqué after the meeting in Paris between the presidents of Poland and France has done little to assuage the negative impression left by Sarkozy over the last few days as he wagged his finger in accusation. ... The French politician made a bigger mistake than many think, because Poles were not the only ones to see this incriminating finger. People from all of the other smaller countries of the EU saw it as well. ... No small country appreciates being lectured to by larger, more powerful states. But when the lecturer is the president of a country that has just taken over the EU Council Presidency it is doubly hard to accept, and bodes ill for the coming six months."
