The Gender Jihad
Alfred Hackensberger describes a movement led by devout Muslim women who are committed to the battle for equal rights for women in Islam. One of the members of the movement is American author Asra Nomani: "'Islam and feminism are not mutually exclusive,' Asra Nomani insists. 'On the contrary, emancipation is very much in keeping with the early teachings of our religion and gives us hope that we can conquer extremism.' The journalist is fighting in the US to save the 'soul of Islam.' Other women are active in Pakistan (Asma Barlas), Iran (Ziba Mir-Hossein) and Lebanon (Azizia al-Hibri). However, these women don't like to be described as feminists, which is understandable because feminism is a secular, Western term. They prefer the term 'Gender Jihad'."
