Switzerland to the rescue?

The Swiss daily Le Temps discusses Switzerland's role in the gas dispute: "Switzerland is suddenly the surprise player in this difficult crisis between Moscow, Kiev and the European Union. Will our country have a hand in solving the gas conflict that has Europe quaking? ... The first request has come from RosUkrEnergo [the gas supplier founded by Russian and Ukrainian shareholders]. ... It - and not Russia - is the one that supplies Ukraine with gas, and Kiev owes it - not Gazprom - the unpaid 3.2 billion dollars. ... A second request has been submitted by a Ukrainian diplomat to the Swiss Federal Office of Energy as well as to the Secretary of State for Economic Development to explain the situation of the Ukraine and demand Swiss intervention. ... Political factors also play a role. ... As opposed to most European countries, Switzerland depends very little on gas. In addition, the Russians and Ukrainians seem to want to avoid having the European Union ... play the role of referee in their conflict."

Roger Köppel on Swiss Patriotism

August 1st is the Swiss national holiday. In an interview conducted by Anne Fournier and Ron Hochuli, Roger Köppel, chief editor of the weekly 'Weltwoche', considers Swiss patriotism. "Our national holiday ... is above all an occasion for fireworks, lanterns and grilled sausages. All this illustrates our relationship with the State. August 1st is a day for citizens and translates into little parties, private and anarchic, reflecting the diversity of Switzerland. ... There exists in Switzerland something I call constitutional patriotism, which is for me the most enlightened form of patriotism. It does not imply any nationalism or nostalgia for the past. It entails a sober and rational feeling of belonging which is concretised by the patriotism of barbecues."

The CIA's activities in Europe

"The majority of legislators, both at the national and European levels, have reacted with indignation to the information provided by Dick Marty. But they are being met with radio silence from their governments," observes the editorial writer, Ron Hochuli. "Now that Dick Marty has cleared the way, it is up to the governments to take over. Each one should put his own house in order, while watching out for attempts at manipulation that are inherent in affairs as complex as this one. And if there is any State today that is capable of blowing the lid off this pressure cooker containing so many unspoken things, it is Switzerland. By divulging the information in its possession, however paltry it may be. And by assuming the role of referee that neutrality makes possible."

Middle East violence menaces Europe

Middle East violence menaces Europe

The peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine are grinding to a halt, while missile attacks from the Gaza Strip, Israeli air strikes and the announced construction of new settlements in East Jerusalem have done much to poison the atmosphere. The maelstrom of violence will engender more terror and thus threaten Europe, commentators write.
