Banks are no ordinary companies
While attending the EU finance ministers' meeting in Brussels Sweden's Finance Minister Anders Borg has criticised the banks for "celebrating as if it was 1999". With reference to the efforts within the EU to tighten the reigns on banks the daily Sydsvenska Dagbladet writes: "Owing to their important function in society banks are no ordinary companies. That's why they can rely on state aid when they slip too far into the red, and that's why special demands should be placed on them. However detailed regulation of the way bank employees are paid - as [French President Nicolas] Sarkozy wishes - is not the right approach. Problems with systems that are particularly prone to taking risks must be resolved at a transnational level. That would probably make it easier to get the US on board, too."

The dispute over Soviet monuments
According to Tobias Lindberg, Estonia has the situation surprisingly well under control after the riots in Tallinn. The same is not true of Moscow, where for days now the Estonian embassy has been under siege from pro-Kremlin youth organisations and the mayor of Moscow has called for a boycott of 'fascist' Estonia. "Russia appears to be intent on further escalating the stormy situation in Estonia, instead of trying to defuse it. Double standards are behind its stance: Russia is frequently and rightly criticised by the rest of the world for things like its democratic deficits and the war in Chechnya. The Kremlin constantly rejects these accusations as attempts to interfere in Russia's internal affairs. But Moscow obviously has no reservations about interfering in something that is clearly an internal affair for Estonia."
