The Church moves out into the world
With the election of an Argentinian pope, the Catholic Church is finally turning its attention to the world's poor, the liberal-conservative daily Corriere della Sera observes jubilantly: "The papacy has switched continents, from Europe to America. In these times of global upheaval this event puts the Church back in the limelight of history. The Church has crossed the Atlantic and elected a man from the South - at a time when the poor South is challenging the rich North and demanding its rights and requirements. ... This removal of the papacy from Europe has the same historical significance as the rejection of Italy in 1978: back then, in the final phase of the conflict between East and West, the new order in Europe was under debate. Today the talk is of a new world order. This turning away from Europe is a good sign, because everyone sees that too much historical ballast has clouded the European Churches' view of the new challenges they face from the world's poor. Perhaps now they will learn to see the world through Francis's eyes."

Church open to criticism
Pope Benedict XVI called on the more that 60,000 visitors to the mass held in Berlin's Olympic Stadium on Thursday evening not to leave the Church despite the abuse scandals and other problems. Prior to the mass he had voiced understanding for the indignation provoked by the cases of abuse in Church circles. This is testimony to the openness of the Pope, writes the liberal-conservative daily Corriere della Sera: "Respecting the opinion of others is nothing new for the Pope. As demonstrated once again yesterday in Berlin, openness and an ability to sympathise with others are characteristic of this man who grew up with the diversity of opinions prevalent at German universities. They must be attributed to the series of statements by the Pope in which he has repeatedly stressed the positive role of the media in criticising the abuse scandal."
