Turkey not the best partner for Romania
During his state visit to Ankara Romanian President Traian Băsescu and his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gül signed several agreements on military and economic cooperation, with the aim of sealing a strategic partnership between their countries. The business paper Capital is sceptical: "For years now Erdoğan has put all his eggs in one basket: consumption. With the help of the central bank which has repeatedly lowered its interest rates, Turkish Banks have been able to offer cheap loans. This phenomenon was also prevalent in the formerly up-and-coming Europe before the Lehman Brothers insolvency. But in Turkey it continues unabated. ... Nevertheless the country offers more promises than certainties. And if its economy starts to falter and foreign policy conflicts continue to flare up, ultimately Turkey might not be the best choice for a privileged partnership with Romania. Our best option, as long as it lasts, is to go on benefiting from the Turks's appetite for consumption and increase our exports to the country."

Bulgaria ignores Romanian tourists
Bulgaria will earn an estimated 2.7 billion euros from tourism this year. But although a million of the roughly six million foreign tourists come from Romania they are for the most part ignored, according to the business paper Capital: "Whether it's on signs or on menus - nowhere is there a single word of Romanian. By contrast there's Russian, German and English everywhere you look, even though one in six tourists is Romanian. ... Even the Bulgarian press seems to have something against us. There's not a scrap of information about the Romanians In the tourism news, only about how many Russians come and how important the Germans are for tourism. This year 300,000 Russians will visit Bulgaria, a third of the number of Romanians, but the press only writes about the Russians. ... Perhaps these little oversights are a reaction to the pointless competition between the two countries that bring up the rear of the EU. We laugh about them, and they make money from us without getting any joy out of it."
