Gazprom wants to control Europe
Analysts in Greece are assuming that the Russian energy company Gazprom has the best chance of winning the bid to buy the Greek gas group Depa, which is to be privatised. Europe's dependence on Russia is assuming dangerous proportions, according to the left-liberal weekly Heti Világgazdaság: "The Greek Depa is an important major enterprise not only for the region, for the future majority owner will wield influence not only over the southern European gas corridor but also over the pipeline system through the Adriatic, not to mention the transit pipelines that supply Europe with energy via Turkey. In addition Gazprom recently announced its wish to buy shares in German power stations belonging to Eon. There is no doubt: German industry, and with it European industry, is now already more at the mercy of Russian sources of energy than is politically permissible. But if only some of the power stations were to fall into Russian hands, this would give Russia control not only over energy sources and pipelines but also over producers of electricity."
