Press freedom still has many enemies
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day celebrated today, Monday, Malén Aznárez, vice president of the Spanish section of Reporters without Borders, takes stock of the situation in the daily El País: "Let's not fool ourselves. These [dictators] are just some of the more visible predators but there are others who threaten freedom of the press. Less cruel, but also more lethal. We're talking about those who are using the economic crisis as an excuse to cut staff in the media sector … or to pay ridiculous salaries; to send 'special envoys' to crisis areas who are really poorly equipped, poorly paid and defenceless collaborators; to intimidate journalists to the point where they become submissive and uncritical professionals."
