Slovakia sleeps through the World Expo

Slovakia threatens to be a flop in the upcoming 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, the president of the country's architect association, Ján Bahna, warns in a commentary for the liberal daily Sme: "We have learned nothing from the past World Expos. From a historical perspective even the presentations of socialist Czechoslovakia were more successful than those of independent Slovakia. We don't feel the need to organise an architecture competition or commission top experts to prepare our presentation, so the intellectual potential of our people remains unexploited. The culture of presenting itself to the world is part of being a new, young state. But we just live our lives - the world doesn't interest us."
