Lithuania's politicians clueless on foreign policy
The Lithuanians will elect a new parliament on Sunday. But foreign policy has only played a minor role in campaigning, the daily Vilniaus diena writes, pinning partial blame on the incompetence of Lithuanian politicians: "Is Lithuania's population really uninterested in foreign politics? ... The rare opinion polls that deal at least in part with foreign policy issues show that Lithuanians are not at all indifferent to such issues. ... International relations and foreign policy are complex. Not everyone is adequately informed about what's going on in other countries. For that reason there is also a lack of clarity about which foreign policies it would be wise to adopt. But when you watch Lithuanian debates on foreign policy issues it is clear: our politicians simply lack the necessary knowledge."

The choice between two evils
The Georgians are faced with the choice between a rock and a hard place in the parliamentary elections on Monday, the daily Vilniaus diena laments: "Both the head of state Mikheil Saakashvili and his main political rival, the oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili [who is running for prime minister], are sharpening their knives. Why? It is hard to imagine what either of the two candidates can give their country. In any case, oligarchs in power do not bode anything good. ... Added to that, various corruption and money wasting scandals are now surfacing, to say nothing of the overall socio-economic situation in Georgia. The straw that broke the camel's back, however, was the so-called jail scandal. Was it concocted? Why has the information been aired only now, right before the elections, by the opposition television station? Was Saakashvili unaware of the torture (whether it was faked or not)? There are many questions that need to be answered."

Syria must not become second Iraq
Against the backdrop of continued fighting in Syria and the failed attempts at mediation in Russia and China the daily Vilniaus diena warns of a potential scenario like that in Iraq: "A forced change of regime, as proposed by the so-called friends of Syria, or more precisely the 'friends of the Syrian opposition', is a dangerous affair. Because in such a case a repetition of the Iraq scenario is likely. … The fighting that is taking place in Syria right now is between different religious groups, and not, as was the case in Egypt and Libya, between the regime and society. … The change of regime in Syria could be effected in a controlled manner by using a diplomatic lever. … Both sides [Alawites and Sunnis] could deploy their representatives in a new compromise government to defuse the current confrontation. Bashar al-Assad? He could actually remain head of state, but with very limited powers."
