Protest over Smolensk enriches Warsaw
The nationalist Catholic demonstrators assembled in front of the Presidential Palace in Warsaw who have been calling for a rigorous enquiry into the Smolensk airline catastrophe on Wednesday decided to gather there only on the weekends, rather than every day. The liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza is happy they are not giving up altogther: "They will continue to hold their mini-lectures and discussions there. Perhaps they are lessening their presence because winter is drawing near or because after six months they're just tired of protesting. But basically it's a good thing for them to keep up a presence, because the tent is now an integral part of the Warsaw cityscape. Particularly on the weekend people come, read the pamphlets and exchange a few words with the defenders [of a memorial cross] and take a few pictures. Those who aren't from Warsaw then have something to tell people back home. In a way it's a living monument to the events of 2010. And the lectures in the tent are a good thing, too."

Lukashenko shows weaknesses
Andrzej Poczobut, the Belarus correspondent of the liberal Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza, was handed down a three-year suspended sentence by a Belarusian court on Tuesday. The newspaper is delighted with the judgement: "If the dictator is beginning to doubt whether it's a good idea to lock people up, then the battle is half won. The suspended sentence is a victory for Andrzej Poczobut. ... It's also a victory for the Belarusian opposition, which after the massive repressive measures six months ago is gathering its strength once again and taking to the streets in peaceful demonstrations. This is a victory for Andrzej's friends, who appeared in court again and again despite having been arrested. And it's a victory for the states, the human rights organisations, the journalists and all those who protested against Andrzej's arrest and the repression of the Belarusian opposition with good intentions."

The Olympic flame wavers in Europe
Seweryn Blumsztajn was delighted to see the Olympia torch relay disrupted in Paris. "Now we, the citizens of the world, have extinguished the flame of the Chinese superpower. In day-to-day life we are powerless against catastrophic world politics. And then suddenly there comes a moment when our Internet appeal or a poster hung in a window become part of the world power of decent people - a new global power. I was moved when the Olympic torch was put out in Paris. I remember the 14th December 1981. ... Together with trade union leaders, we [living in exile in Paris] staged a demonstration against the imposition of martial law in Poland. Hundreds of thousands of Parisians marched behind us; nowhere else in the world did so many people join the protest. How proud I was of this city back then, and today I am once again proud of it."
