Hungary offers retirement at 58
While in France millions of people are demonstrating against the raise in the retirement age to 62 the right-wing conservative government in Hungary plans to make it possible for women to retire at 58. The business paper Világgazdaság fails to understand the logic of this move: "The women in question are naturally delighted with the promise made by Viktor Orbán's government. ... That popular measures are not necessarily rational is quite another matter. It is now common knowledge that the number of old people is increasing across Europe while the pension funds are moving on ever shakier ground. For this reason a raise in the retirement age is on the agenda of many governments, and in some countries it is nearing the 70-years mark. ... In Hungary there is the added problem that early retirement for women will lower the number of taxpayers. This is a worrying prospect as Hungary is already among the countries with the lowest number of taxpayers in Europe."

Help for the automotive industry won't pay off
The business newspaper Világgazdaság writes that injecting funds into the automotive industry will not pay off: "The restructuring of the bank sector has not yet ended, and already huge sums are being pumped into the automotive industry. The reasons lie on the one hand in the credit squeeze on the markets and on the other in people's anxiety about the future. ... But is it worthwhile to inject such astronomical sums into the automobile industry? If the result is a sector that produces cheap, comfortable electric cars, the answer is yes. More probable, however, is that the antiquated structures and overproduction will remain. So it's not worth it."
