European elections: local elections arouse more interest
The daily Les Echos writes that the European elections are rousing precious little interest in Italy because local elections will be held in several regions at the same time: "Italy, which is traditionally pro-European, is not displaying the slightest interest in the upcoming elections. They'll be held at the same time as local elections, which play an important role in this highly decentralised country. What with the economic crisis and the prime minister's divorce and legal problems, the European elections are having a hard time being noticed at all. ... People on the Right are taking advantage of the non-stop flow of immigrants to win influence and focus on security - control rounds by civilians will soon be allowed - and the fight against immigration. Apart from that the crisis pretty much steals all the attention. The decline in gross domestic product was steeper in italy than in France, and unemployment is still rising."

The crisis in Italy
The business newspaper Les Echos analyses the effects of the economic crisis in Italy: "One crisis follows the next. ... Italy has officially been in a recession since November, and now the economic crisis is being exacerbated by a growing number of political scandals. ... Like the rest of Europe, the peninsula was gripped by anxiety at the start of January. ... Of course Italians will be able to rely on their savings, their families and labour flexibility. But the poverty we are already seeing will spread to [even] more families. As [Prime Minister] Silvio Berlusconi cannot open the sluices of state expenditure, he exhorts his fellow citizens to consume. A fine idea, but one which won't bring the country very far."

Berlusconi makes Alitalia his election issue
Silvio Berlusconi, leader of the Italian right, recently denounced the attempt by Air France-KLM to buy Alitalia. For Marie-Laure Cittanova, Berlusconi thus brings to light "the fractures of the departing government [headed by Romano Prodi]. ... This is forcing Walter Veltroni, the left candidate [for April 13 and 14th's legislative elections], into a difficult position. Rome's mayor had initially praised the government. Then he attempted to obscure his connections with the team that had so greatly disappointed. Berlusconi's offensive has again forced him to take a position of solidarity. ... What does 'il Cavaliere' hope to do with such a move ? He probably thinks that he'll profit from putting a lid on any move from the centre-left, especially if he can at the same time play to his supporters in the north. He risks, however, his credibility if he cannot bring about an alternative offer to that of the Franco-Dutch company."
