Economy more important than political reform
The Communist Party's decision to appoint Xi Jinping to vice-president of the party's Central Military Commission quashes hopes of political reform in the country, the liberal-conservative daily Corriere della Sera writes: "Because Xi Jinping is naturally subordinate to the party. It claimed the 'leading role' for itself yesterday. ... The new five-year plan covering the years 2011 to 2015 is waiting to be implemented, and although the terminology may be reminiscent of the Soviet era it contains entirely new challenges. Beijing intends to secure 'relatively rapid and stable growth' by reducing economic imbalances. The debate about political reforms sparked by the repeated statements of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and all the talk about the Nobel Peace Prize for dissident Liu Xiaobo are nothing but hollow phrases. ... The impulse for change initiated by Xi Jinping will be subordinate to the role of the party. And his famous singer wife, Peng Liyuan, will be advised to tone down her performances, as befits the wife of a leader."

A slap in the face for China
Coming as it has in the context of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) between the 27 EU nations and 10 Asian states held in Beijing, the Italian daily Corriere della Sera sees the decision to award the [Sakharov] prize to Hu as a provocation for the host. "Human rights were also supposed to be on the agenda ... but everyone looked away, as if they wanted to gloss over the crisis. Awarding the prize to Hu Jia has upset the programme. [This is] Europe's slap in the face for China, particularly since Beijing had already expressed disapproval of the idea of giving the peace prize to the democratic activist. ... However [the Chinese] government spokesperson Liu [Jianchao] is at pains to soothe the tensions ... The global crisis has directed the ASEM's agenda towards addressing the economic situation, and China is pleased that Europe wants to include it in this effort. China prefers summit meetings like that of the [G]20 with [US President George W.] Bush to dealing with human rights issues."
