A Flemish constitution
Belgian's Flemish population celebrated their national holiday yesterday, the 11th of July. Jan Peumans, president of the Flemish parliament, used the occasion to call for a constitution for the Flemish. The daily De Standaard approves of the idea, comparing the Flemish struggle for autonomy with that of the Catalan population in Spain: "It may be that Flanders does not have to fight as hard against Brussels as the Catalans do against Madrid. Nevertheless here too things don't happen as a matter of course. If the political stalemate of the past years tells us anything, it's that the primarily Flemish sighs for more powers for the regional governments are not without controversy, and that these require much argumentation and struggle. ... The [Flemish constitution] is certainly a legitimate wish. It is good that what Flanders stands for should be put down in writing. ... Nevertheless one must not expect a miraculous strengthening of the Flemish identity from such a constitution. Far more important is that the text should also be implemented in Flanders."

Brussels Motor Show charts a green course
The European Motor Show Brussels 2010 has kicked off with shining Ferraris and BMWs. The industry could do with a party in these times of crisis, the daily De Standaard writes, but on the other hand it is also under pressure from climate change: "Naturally the most environmentally friendly car is the one you trade in for a rail card. But even more natural is the assumption that cars won't disappear that quickly and that we need to embark on the quest for ecological cars. We seem to be on the green road. Ferraris, BMWs and co. won't suddenly lose their appeal but the trend is towards smaller, lighter cars. However this is only because they are cheaper to use. From an ecological point of view it's good that not only the car show has grown smaller and more simple, but also the cars being sold."

Mama Kim wins US Open
The Belgian tennis player Kim Clijsters has won the US Open. A striking comeback, writes the daily De Standard, commenting that it's just a pity international commentators have focussed exclusively on her grand slam win as a mother, and not her ability to play good tennis: "Of course all of these reflections on her motherhood are a bit strange. As if becoming a mother were some kind of sickness after which you can't compete in sports any more. And this despite the fact that there have been plenty of first-class athletes who are mothers. Paula Radcliffe, for example, won the New York marathon in 2007 and 2008, although she'd had a child in January 2007 aged 33. ... Moreover there is also the fact that Kim Clijsters leads a happy life. There's a psychological expression for this: the transfer effect. If everything works well at home, in general you also function better at work. A stable background helps you triumph in less stable things: for example a world-class tennis match."
