Lacking information about Chernobyl
The true scale of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is still being hushed up, write the MEPs Daniel Cohn-Bendit und Monica Frassoni in an open letter published by the left-liberal daily La Repubblica: "The governments of the former USSR, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia have been unable to master the enormous problems caused by the Chernobyl disaster. One of the main reasons for their failure is a lack of objective information about the impact of radioactivity on health. For years the publishing of scientific studies about the role radioactivity in the development of diseases that can lead to disabilities or even death was blocked by local authorities. ... A secret pact between the nuclear lobby and the autocratic regime in Belarus also explains this censorship."
