Customers must demand justice from Apple
Apple's new iPad computer goes on sale today, Friday, in Europe. It is manufactured in China. This prompts the leftist daily die tageszeitung to criticise the degrading working conditions in electronics companies there: "The irony is that the conditions at Apple suppliers are no worse than in other Chinese factories in which no one shows any interest. But a highly profitably company like Apple cannot be content with ensuring only that its products are made for the Chinese minimum wage, on which no one who works only the regular working hours can live in southern China. Apple and the like, which cast themselves as dynamic and innovative in their advertising, must assume their social responsibility. The technological magic and revolution Apple promises is by no means evident in the social area. It is also up to the customer to demand fair conditions by exerting pressure, even in the form of boycotts."

Catastrophe puts Burma in the spotlight
"Burma's population has been denied a say in the country's affairs for twenty years. Holding a referendum now smacks of dishonest intentions," Sven Hansen writes. "Nevertheless, the junta shows no sign of postponing the plebiscite, and continues to bar the access of vitally needed aid. It is unclear whether the generals are doing this out of a cynical calculation - or whether in their new 'capital' in the country's interior they really lack an overview of the devastation wreaked by the cyclone on the country's coast. In fact the two questions go hand in hand. The junta had intended to prevent media coverage of the referendum. The cyclone has now faced them with a dilemma: either they postpone the referendum and let aid workers into the country, or they hold the referendum as planned and forgo external aid."
