Europe's politicians write off Greece

The financial markets and Europe's politicians are starting to prepare for Greece's exit from the Eurozone, the business paper Hospodářské noviny writes:"While Eurozone representatives were still discussing Greece's future in the zone, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel only spoke of Athens staying in the EU. She made no mention of the Eurozone at all. Certainly, a Greek exit would create huge turbulence on the markets, but the Union is far better prepared for that now than it was two years ago. The politicians are thinking much more about how to deal with the consequences for Spain, Italy and Portugal than about keeping Athens in the Monetary Union at all costs. ... Of course, they are seeking the most politically and economically acceptable variant. But the current behaviour of the Greeks leads one to believe we'll have to buy drachmas for our next Greek holiday."

Czechs can elect president themselves

The President of the Czech Republic will in future be elected directly by the people. Following the house of representatives the senate, the country's second chamber of parliament, voted on Wednesday in favour of a corresponding change to the constitution. The business paper Hospodářské noviny says the decision marks a turning point for voters: "The fears of the opponents of direct elections, namely that the people could elect some superstar or another, failed to sway the senators who are themselves directly elected. The parliamentarians wanted first and foremost to give the people what they want, as voters have been calling for direct elections for some time. The powers of [President] Václav Klaus' successor will neither be stronger nor weaker than the those of Klaus himself. Nevertheless the people have yet another opportunity to go to the polls, and the presidential elections will at least be among the most entertaining."

Van Rompuy would be a good choice

Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy is under consideration as a candidate for EU president, a fact that business paper Hospodářské Noviny says surprises Rompuy alone. After all, the EU's major leaders would prefer an inconspicuous president: "Herman Van Rompuy - you don't know who that is? No matter, the Belgian prime minister was himself surprised to hear of his nomination. What's clear is that the big bosses in the EU -  [Nicolas] Sarkozy, [Angela] Merkel, [Gordon] Brown and [Silvio] Berlusconi - don't want to see a strong EU president, like [former British prime minister] Tony Blair for example, outshine them. Van Rompuy would therefore be a good choice. After all, up to now the only Belgian who was well-known in most European countries was Jean-Claude Van Damme."

Czech Communists aiming for political correctness

The Czech Communists, the only former ruling party in Central and Eastern Europe who are seen as hardliners, have declared their willingness to repeat their apology for the times before 1989. The business paper Hospodářské Noviny doesn't believe the offer is genuine: "They want to sell an old product and make a fat profit: seats in a government with the Social Democrats, should the latter win the elections. [KP boss Vojtěch] Filip has had several opportunities to apologise and each time he resisted. What Filip now wants to repeat is very weak. It only covers the greatest excesses. Moreover to this day the Communists persist in describing numerous communist repressions as necessities of the time. A genuine apology must be sincere, unconditional and certainly not part of a political deal aimed at gaining more power. But the Communists are incapable of this and therefore they have no place in the government."
