Poles call for investigation into plane crash
The Polish "April 10 Movement" - representing the next of kin of those killed in the plane crash in which former president Lech Kaczyński died - held a protest on Sunday calling for the establishment of an international commission to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. The left-liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza cautions people not to let their hopes run too high: "Of course one can repeat endlessly ... that the systematic causes of the plane crash are being looked into - meaning the whole chain of unfortunate circumstances, mistakes and events that led up to the accident. And of course that could involve pinpointing the responsibility of members of government belonging to the Civic Platform for the 36th Regiment [responsible for air safety of the Polish military] as well as for Lech Kaczyński and his staff. And it could establish the responsibility of the [secret service] BBN for the plane and flight preparations. We have the right to demand answers. Nevertheless months or even years from now ... no one will be found responsible for the crash."

A poisoned atmosphere
The political atmosphere in Italy is poisoned, writes the liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza in view of the attack on Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi: "The Italian Left, which is powerless in the face of the billionaire populist demagogue, is adopting increasingly dangerous positions. The spin-offs include for example the film Shooting Silvio, as well as the Kill Berlusconi group on Facebook. Once you accept an escalation in oral violence, real violence is never long in coming. In Italy, a country with a bloody terrorist past, the attack on the prime minister is like an alarm signal."

Polish national conservative unable to achieve majority in Europe
The liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza comments on the failed attempt of conservative politician Michał Kamiński to be elected vice-president of the European Parliament: "The defeat of the PiS [Polish national conservative party] MP … is proof that the European Parliament doesn't like the PiS's political style. It is based on a conservative tradition that is alien to the West's political right nowadays. … One could almost feel sorry for Michał Kamiński for having fallen victim to the internal power struggles of the British Conservatives and therefore not having been considered for election to vice-president. He virtually had the post in his pocket. … But then his British colleague Edward McMillian-Scott of the conservative faction unexpectedly announced his candidacy and Kamiński was forced to face a genuine rival."
