Expensive organisation makes Olympics unprofitable

The organisers of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver seriously underestimated the costs of the event, which according to conservative daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna will no doubt ensure that future events are a lot less extravagant: "Vancouver pumped so much money into the games that they already know they will never be able to redeem their investment. Even the TV stations are making losses. The US broadcaster NBC estimates that losses will amount to around 200 million dollars. After the Canadians were chosen to host the games back in 2003 they estimated the costs at 660 million dollars. The current pessimistic yet realistic estimate is six billion dollars! This will no doubt be that last time we see such extravagant Olympic Games. Is Vancouver the end of the 86-year-long Olympic Games tradition? Surely not. But the next ones will doubtless be on a more modest scale."

UEFA and EU partners in supervising football finances

Ján Figel, EU Commissioner responsible for Education, Training, Culture and Multilingualism, has welcomed the decision of the Union of European Football Associations UEFA according to which starting with the 2012/13 season a club's expenditure on transfers and salaries may no longer exceed the value of its assets. The daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna comments: "The EU is revealing a more and more humane face. Up to now UEFA was regarded as an organisation that pursued only economic interests and which by organising the football business had build up its own empire on the old continent. UEFA boss Michel Platini recently broke with this stereotype. … The EU's reaction to Platini's latest project … is a real sign that this once excellent footballer has found a strong partner for his efforts - namely the politicians."

No delays in the EURO 2012 football championships

Michel Platini, president of the European football association UEFA, arrives for talks today in Poland, which will co-host the EURO 2012 football championships. The liberal-conservative daily Dziennik comments on Platini's statement that he would do everything to ensure the games are held in Poland and Ukraine, but that the final decision would be taken in September. "This kind of statement is a perfectly normal tactic in the business world, to remind partners of the agreement. You have to bear in mind that football is big business. UEFA is presenting us with a lucrative offer. It awarded Poland and Ukraine the contract to prepare its product. It will earn huge amounts on the event, and allow us to profit as well. Too much is at stake to get the jitters and look laughable in the process. The argument that withdrawing the contract to organise the championships would be bad for UEFA's image - and an admission of an embarrassing mistake - is also true. And that is our additional trump."
