Freeze victims show Eastern Europe's weakness
The extreme cold snap that has had Europe in its grip for the past two weeks has claimed 300 lives, 135 in Ukraine alone, 68 in Poland and 60 in Russia. These figures show how precarious life in Eastern Europe remains, writes the left-liberal daily Frankfurter Rundschau: "The bitterest example is Ukraine. ... Oligarchs have amassed billions and flaunt their luxury yachts and other status symbols. The general populace, by contrast, is freezing and hungry. ... But there's still much to be done in the EU - as well as in Europe's economic miracle, Poland. ... More than a dozen people have died of carbon monoxide poisoning in their homes because their heating systems were defective. ... The West-East divide remains vast in Europe. It can only be overcome when the EU and its strongest members like Germany and France place social harmonisation high on their agendas."

Prime Minister's re-election good for Poland
Prime Minister Donald Tusk's liberal-conservative Civic Platform (PO) won Sunday's parliamentary elections in Poland with almost 40 percent of the vote, while Jarosław Kaczyński's national-conservative PiS came in at around 30 percent. That's good for the EU, writes the liberal daily Tages-Anzeiger: "It's a blessing for Europe that Tusk will remain in power. Kaczyński drove Poland into isolation in 2007. Tusk has firmly anchored the country where it belongs - at the heart of Europe. With his campaign attacks on neighbouring Germany Kaczyński once more demonstrated just how capable he is of throwing a spanner in the works. A change of government on the Vistula is the last thing the crisis-stricken EU needs. Tusk stands for continuity and stability. That is good. But just maintaining the status quo is not going to be enough either. ... Tusk has failed to deliver answers on many issues, above and beyond domestic affairs. In his second mandate he will have to chart a firm course and show his true colours - above all regarding the introduction of the euro."
