An embarassing situation for the Church

The Berlusconi affair has also put the Church in an embarrassing situation, theologist Vito Mancuso writes in the left-liberal Italian daily La Repubblica. Don Antonio Sciortino, chief editor of the Catholic weekly Famiglia Christiana, has called on the Church to clarify its position: "[This] means a public condemnation of the behaviour of the current head of government in view of his disregard for Catholic morals. … The answer [of the Church] depends on which of the two sides of the Church's soul prevails - the political or the prophetic. … It is likely … that the political soul with its accommodating stance will triumph. … The head of government will continue to count on the discreet and stout support of the Church hierarchy, and will not fail to reward it accordingly. But one thing must be clear: the words of the Church will hardly seem credible if it dares to defend the family [yet again] in the future."

Vito Mancuso on a free life in accordance with God's will

Commenting in the daily La Repubblica on the euthanasia debate over Eluano Englaro, Vito Mancuso, a Milanese theologian, calls on the Italian parliament to respect the fundamental principles of freedom: "We are now expecting the law on the biological testament. And I believe it is precisely the task of the state to draw up a law that takes account of the various ethic codes of all citizens and gives everyone the possibility to live and die according to their own world view. … As regards the accusations of relativism that raises personal freedom above objective truth and which I always hear in the admonishing voice of Pope Benedict XVI I would like to point out that only one standpoint can apply: Either the principle of self-determination is legitimate because it conforms to the logic of the world, which is the logic of freedom, or the principle of self-determination is not legitimate because the logic of the world is governed by obedience to God. Therefore I believe that the freedom to make one's own decisions on life … is a pre-condition for living in accordance with the will of God. … It would be a great gift to the divided nation if the representatives of the Church hierarchy followed the example of the wise school of Christian Democrats and reminded our forgetful politicians about the secularity of the state. Among other things this would help them to indeed be the party of freedom they want to be."
