Ireland must investigate crimes by nuns

The UN Committee Against Torture has called for an investigation into the abuse and cruelty committed in the middle of the 20th century in the asylums and laundries for so-called "fallen women" run by the Irish Magdalene Order. The Irish Human Rights Commission also sought to launch an investigation, but without success. The time has come to face up to these crimes, writes the liberal daily The Irish Times: "Yesterday, the committee too recommended that the State carry out a statutory investigation of allegations of torture and inhumane treatment of women in the laundries. It went further to state that the State should prosecute and punish the perpetrators of the alleged abuse in appropriate cases, and provide redress and compensation to the victims. Whatever about the church, the State cannot go on passing the buck on this tragic issue. It has a moral responsibility to the surviving women."

Sympathy a consolation

Despite its shortcomings Pope Benedict XVI's pastoral letter is an important step towards reforming the Catholic Church in Ireland, writes the daily The Irish Times: "None of it explains any, never mind the epic scale, of the sexual, physical and emotional abuse and neglect meted out by Catholic religious to tens of thousands of children held in orphanages, reformatories and industrial schools throughout those many decades of 20th-century Ireland before the Second Vatican Council and at a time when traditional moral absolutism reigned supreme in Catholicism on this island. ...All that said, there is much in the letter which is as refreshing and clear as cool spring water. Included would be his words of sorrow and admiration for the abused, particularly those who suffered in residential institutions."
