A turning point in the debate about withdrawing troops from Afghanistan
According to recent surveys a majority of American citizens favours a withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. Even influential conservatives like columnist George Will oppose the operations. The daily NRC Handelsblad discerns a turning point in the debate over the military operation in Afghanistan: "Will, no party bigwig, is the type of conservative intellectual Washington listens to. And the fact that he used his widely-read column yesterday to argue for a withdrawal of all combat troops is a signal. … This is by no means the end of the debate. But if this type of conservative effectively turns against the war no one should be surprised to see [even] more supporters revise their views in the near future. And does [US President Barack] Obama, who won … the election campaign last year thanks to his opposition to the war in Iraq really want to go down in history as the man who went on fighting a war his people were already tired of?"

The durability of the multicultural coalition will be put to the test sooner than people appeared to expect on yesterday's historical election day."
