Poland should renegotiate gas contract
In view of the gas conflict between Russia and Belarus Poland should renegotiate its gas contract with Russia, writes the conservative daily Polska: "By all odds the current problems with Russian gas deliveries in some EU countries - including Poland - have sealed the fate of the new and fortunately still unsigned gas contract between Poland and the Russian company Gazprom. After a decade of such manoeuvring the Russian company and the state behind it have once more proved themselves unreliable partners and gas suppliers. Let us not forget: since 2000 Russia has turned off the gas taps several times in succession - first to Ukraine then to Belarus. Each time the issue at stake was payments, but the results always played into a political game."

The government should help Poles in Britain
There is a large group of Polish immigrants living in Britain who have repeadtedly been the target of violent attacks. The daily Polska calls on the Polish government to take action against these incidents: "In Britain and Ireland they beat up Poles. And not just Poles, by the way, but also other immigrants from Central Europe, especially Roma and Romanians who go there in search of work and a better life. This has been going on for some years, but now - during the crisis - attacks on immigrants have become almost a daily occurrence. The mechanism by which hate builds up towards foreigners who 'take away work and money' [from the native population] is typical. It works according to the principles of drawing the simple conclusion: 'When things go badly for us the others are to blame'. ... If we want to put an end to the wave of violence against our compatriots on the Island, then the Polish government must start taking action via its diplomatic missions."

Poland and Germany plan joint history book
Poland's ministry of education will join with the educational ministries of the German states to introduce a joint German-Polish history book. Wojciech Rogacin explains: "In Polish history books, the typical German is a barbaric aggressor, someone who for thousands of years only thought about how best to snatch our territory and keep the Polish people down. There is not a word about the rich German culture – found also in Polish areas – or German science or industry. And it's the same in German books. They contain few references to the Warsaw Uprising, the forced resettlement of Poles and the role of Solidarność. … A joint history text reflecting work by historians from both countries could knock down walls of stereotypes and lies – achieving a relationship like that between the French and Germans."
