Lack of public spirit fuels illegal activities
It is estimated that the financial volume of illegal transactions in Italy amounts to 419.4 billion euros annually. Of that sum, 250 billion is put down to tax evasion and 169.4 billion to the criminal economy. According to the business paper Il Sole 24 Ore the lack of public spirit is a decisive factor which contributes to this "sad primacy: The irregular and to a greater extent the criminal economy require a high degree of trust among the participants, because there is the danger that such activities could be exposed. And it is here that the network of family and friends … has a powerful impact. … A fatal mixture promoted by the historic substrate of a great lack of public spirit … is formed. There can be no explanation for the success of organised crime without this socio-cultural willingness [to dispense with public spirit]."

Wave of protests could spread to the world of employment
The Italian business daily Il Sole 24 Ore responds to the demonstrations against the G20 summit in London and the attacks on entrepreneurs in France as follows: "The crucial difference is that in the case of France the attacks are directed against the captains of industry and not against the managers of the financial world, and that workers who have lost their jobs as well as unionists are participating. Compared with the protests of the anti-globalisation activists the conflicts in France are something new and much more alarming … . It would be good if the representatives of the countries who are gathered at the G20 summit in London took measures to deal not only with the demonstrators in London, but also with the wave of rebellion that, owing among other things to the cultural globalisation of the media, could also spread to workplaces if the social consequences of the crisis are not adequately addressed."
