"Attack" on Polish schools in Lithuania
Lithuania is currently preparing a school reform whereby many schools of the Polish minority population would disappear because of the low number of pupils. The nationalist Catholic daily Nasz Dziennik takes a dim view of the reform: "After the education reform in Lithuania there will be no more than two Polish high schools in the Šalčininkai district municipality [where Poles make up 80 percent of the population]. Lithuania is launching an attack on Polish schools. With its school reform Vilnius will change the traditional system of general education. The problem is that as a result a large part of the Polish regional schools will disappear altogether."

Punishment for homophobic bishops
According to the draft Equity Bill, bishops in the UK who refuse to ordain homosexuals or women may soon be severely penalised. The nationalist conservative Polish paper Nasz Dziennik is outraged: "For Catholics this is a true British hammer! ... If this strange bill really does come into force in January, then bishops who refuse to ordain homosexuals or women will be subject to horrendous fines, banned from using certain Church property and even threatened with jail sentences. ... All the more interesting is it that the draconian law would only apply to Catholics. The House of Commons, which has already passed the bill, determined it would not be applicable to other confessions."

No EU right to abortion please!
In July Swedish MEP Brigitta Ohlsson launched a campaign collecting signatures in favour of an EU-wide right to abortion. Her initiative is based on the Treaty of Lisbon which Poland has yet to ratify. The national Catholic daily Nasz Dziennik writes: "Another argument for not ratifying the Treaty of Lisbon. … As Senator Piotr Łukasz Andrzejewski of the [national conservative] PiS party has explained, it is unacceptable that EU member states be obliged to legalise abortion as this is a matter for the sovereign decision of each member state. … This initiative is particularly aimed against Poland whose laws forbid abortion."
