The press in the age of citizen journalists
The 59th World Newspaper Congress ended on Wednesday, June 7 in Moscow. Journalists Marina Almeida and Sonia Correia, who attended the event, observe that readers are contributing more than ever to the content of newspapers. "The advent of digital photography and video has forced the press and the media in general to adopt new approaches. It was thus amateur videos that lent the Asian tsunami its full visual force. To an even greater degree, it is with the attacks in London that citizen journalism became a reality." The writers cite Bertrand Pecquerie, the director of the World Forum of Editors-in-Chief: "It is absolutely vital that newspapers refocus on society. They have become too removed from readers and the real world."
