The Baltic states have a North American flavour
Gonzales Aragones, the daily's Moscow correspondent, makes a comparison between the Heads of State of the three Balkan countries following the election on Saturday, September 23rd, of Toomas Hendrik IIves as president of Estonia. He judges that this election "adds the final touch of American flavour to the Balkans, the territory of the Soviet Union that has felt the politically furthest away from Moskow. IIves, who will be Head of State for this little country of 1.4 million inhabitants for the next five years, is thus joining his counterparts in Latvia and Lithuania, Vaira Vike-Freiberga and Valdas Adamkus. All three have been repatriated from North America, a land where their families had been exiled. All three studied in the United States and Canada before returning to each of their countries of origin".
