Can Europe still expand?
According to Iván Bába, editor-in-chief of the website Budapest Analyses, the EU has jeopardised its own enlargement plans by agreeing to let Bulgaria and Romania join. "Respect for the law is the main thing that keeps the European Union together. In Central Europe, including Hungary, laws are still perceived as an obstacle to be overcome: integration into the system is a very gradual process. Certain political forces in Western Europe are calling for a halt to the eastward expansion of the EU and want a two-speed Europe which would widen the gap between the old members and the new members. The premature accession of Romania and Bulgaria will strengthen the position of these forces, weaken cohesion within the Union, and hamper cooperation. According to the most recent progress report Romania and Bulgaria are not states in which the rule of law is strong. As things stand now, their accession will not contribute to spreading Europe's political culture to the East."

Confronting the Stasi Past
Poland will perhaps become the first country in Eastern Europe in which the change in system is resolutely carried through to its final consequences," columnist Istvan Baba comments, after the new Polish government announced plans to reorganise the state security services. "In all the countries undergoing the process of transformation, Stasi bosses were given the task of integrating themselves into democracy under a new name. As a result, almost all the Stasi officers and officials have remained in positions in which they have performed impeccably over the past five decades. Even today, this force is still stretching its tentacles into all areas of social, economic and political life."
