US film industry doing just fine
The news blog Rue89 sees good prospects for the US film industry: "We know that American cinema has created a place for itself internationally, or rather, in the cinemas of the world. It is true that cinema exhibitors in most countries tend to programme either national or American films, with the result that global cinema, the cinema we find in Europe and North Africa, in Asia and elsewhere, is American. ... One could conclude that American cinema is strongly dependent on foreign sales, but this is only partially true. In fact, a quarter of American film revenues come from the cinemas, and three quarters from other sources like television and video. ... Some people had predicted that videos and DVDs would be ousted by pay-per-view and illegal film downloads. [But] DVDs are still around ... and film releases in cinemas have remained a stable cultural practise for years."
