Spain marks 70th anniversary of Civil War
Spain is commemorating the 70th anniversary of the July 18, 1936 coup d'etat that toppled the Second Republic and plunged the country into Civil War. Journalist Joaquin Prieto spoke with Santiago Carillo, who was a 21-year-old budding socialist at the time. He compares today's Spain to the Spain of 1936. "The right is acting in the same way as on the eve of the July 18 coup. Spain's unity is fracturing; people speak about persecution of the church, they are questioning the legitimacy of the democratically elected government. Presently, no one is talking about a Communist threat, but Zapatero is described as being guilty of every imaginary evil. But the comparison ends there. Today, companies are making lots of profit, there are no major social conflicts and Catholics quietly practice their faith, with financial support from the state."
