Middle East discriminates against Christians

The attack on Christians in Alexandria is merely the bloody sequel to the decline of Christianity in Muslim countries, writes the left-liberal daily Süddeutsche Zeitung: "Before the beginning of World War II, Christians accounted for almost one fifth of the population between the Mediterranean and Iraq. ... Today they make up only three to five percent. ... The economic situation, political instability, conflict, civil war and the hope for a better future are the prime motives [for emigration]. ... In the more tolerant Morocco, Protestant missionaries are deported because any attempt to convert Muslims is banned. Malaysian Christians have to go to court against Muslim zealots for the right to use the word 'Allah' for their God. Algerians who secretly become Christians - as elsewhere also in the hope of improving their chances of emigration - are only asking for harassment. ... The exception is Iran. Its 300,000 Armenians, Assyrians and Chaldeans encounter no difficulties whatsoever. ... But that does nothing to prevent the historical decline of Christianity in its countries of origin."

The onus is on Iran

If Iran ceased its uranium enrichment programme the compromise with Brazil and Turkey in the nuclear dispute would be a true success, writes the daily Süddeutsche Zeitung: "Ahmadinejad has scored a real victory. Once more he was in the limelight, this time not as a provocateur however, but as partner to a potentially productive solution. 'There is no longer any reason for sanctions', the Turkish foreign minister said at the end. ... As it turns out, the transfer of Iranian uranium for further enrichment abroad is part of a package that was wrapped long ago but never tied up. ... Doubts remain about whether Iran will really deliver the fuel, and above all whether it will now respect the three UN resolutions and stop its enrichment programme. That would satisfy almost everyone - apart from those who would prefer escalation to a solution to the conflict."

Aid for the Palestinians

"Money was only the superficial issue in the Paris meeting of 90 countries that wish to support the reconstruction of the Palestinian territories," explains Rudolf Chimelli. "In reality, political goals were practically the only matter discussed within the first hour of this donors' conference: participants spoke of peace between Palestinians and Israelis, of the establishment of a Palestinian state before the end of next year, of economic stability as the basis for secure coexistence. … The Israelis must return to the borders of 1967 and grant the Palestinians the right to live in East Jerusalem. Because a Palestinian state on 18 percent of the former British Mandate, and that divided into cantons through strategic occupied corridors, would not be viable even with transfusions of money."
