Lacking information about Chernobyl
The true scale of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is still being hushed up, write the MEPs Daniel Cohn-Bendit und Monica Frassoni in an open letter published by the left-liberal daily La Repubblica: "The governments of the former USSR, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia have been unable to master the enormous problems caused by the Chernobyl disaster. One of the main reasons for their failure is a lack of objective information about the impact of radioactivity on health. For years the publishing of scientific studies about the role radioactivity in the development of diseases that can lead to disabilities or even death was blocked by local authorities. ... A secret pact between the nuclear lobby and the autocratic regime in Belarus also explains this censorship."

EU Parliament demands more unity from Europe
The daily Le Monde publishes the so-called Spinelli manifesto initiated by the four Members of the European Parliament Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Isabelle Durant, Sylvie Goulard and Guy Verhofstadt, which is meant to foster a common view of Europe: "In this new world, every European country is a small country. But we have one advantage: we have built together a European Union. It is a remarkable construction in which European nation-states, some even long divided by protracted conflicts, decided to be 'united in diversity' and form a Commonwealth, a Community in the true sense of the word. ... Striving for shared peace and prosperity, we managed to work together and combine forces, thus fostering unprecedented prosperity, democracy and reconciliation on the continent. ... Unfortunately, whereas the formidable challenges of a manifold crisis demand common responses, drawn at least at European level, too many politicians fall tempted to believing in national salvation only."

The egoistic threat
Green Member of the European Parliament Daniel Cohn-Bendit sees the reasons for the threatened rejection of the the EU Reform Treaty in the egoism of individual states. "We live in societies that are driven by a logic of egoism. ... The Irish have got everything from Europe yet they are not aware of it. ... It seems we Europeans are not able to explain to other people what we are doing. ... If the Irish No wins out, [the EU] will have to once more address the question of how Europe is to function, and whether one state should be able to veto the Union's political decisions."

Writers are not "super men"
The European deputy Daniel Cohn-Bendit reacts in an interview with Laurent Joffrin, to revelations on the Waffen SS past of the German writer Günter Grass. "In the end, everyone's existence is tainted in some way, even the greatest moralists' of our time. So Günter Grass has a slur on his life. It is sad for him and his explanations are pitiful. But this also renders him more human. In a way it is reassuring. ... This reassures us in our own lives. This means that even in literature there is no such thing as a superman. There is no superthinker. Sartre also had a slur, and Garcia Marquez too, who idolised Castro. In reality, these faults bring them closer to us. They are weak and thus human. They give us the possibility of facing up to our own slurs."

Daniel Cohn-Bendit calls for Iran's WC Disqualification
Following the recent, anti-Israeli remarks made by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, EU MP for the Greens, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, has called for Iran to be disqualified from next year's football World Cup. This, he points out in an interview led by Peter Unfried, would turn the mostly progressive football fans in that country against their president. "My theory is that that's the way to make them withdraw their support for Ahmadinejad. The Iranian constitution allows for an impeachment of the president, and this is where the World Cup disqualification could play a role." As an alternative he proposes "an Iran-Israel football tournament – with a match at home and a match away for each team. That would force the Iranians to recognise the flag, national hymn and the reality of the existence of Israel – both in terms of football and in real terms."
