Adriana Faranda and the dilemma of apology
A pillar of the Red Brigade in Italy in the 1970s, Adriana Faranda wishes, upon leaving prison, to meet the loved-ones of the victims of the armed struggle fought by this organisation. She explains the reasoning behind this approach in an interview conducted by Enric Gonzalez. "Of course, the very act of asking forgiveness from victims is another form of violence: they are thus confronted with the dilemma of forgiving or not, which only adds to the pain. We are not able to give them any compensation either. But we can perhaps appease them. We [several former members of the Brigade have made this gesture] have contacted these people, for we thought this might offer them some relief. They have been able to reproach us their pain, reinforcing our determination to eliminate violence. And this has given us hope to succeed in escaping the weight of all that we have done."
