Roger Köppel on Swiss Patriotism
August 1st is the Swiss national holiday. In an interview conducted by Anne Fournier and Ron Hochuli, Roger Köppel, chief editor of the weekly 'Weltwoche', considers Swiss patriotism. "Our national holiday ... is above all an occasion for fireworks, lanterns and grilled sausages. All this illustrates our relationship with the State. August 1st is a day for citizens and translates into little parties, private and anarchic, reflecting the diversity of Switzerland. ... There exists in Switzerland something I call constitutional patriotism, which is for me the most enlightened form of patriotism. It does not imply any nationalism or nostalgia for the past. It entails a sober and rational feeling of belonging which is concretised by the patriotism of barbecues."

An exhibition devoted to 20th-century Switzerland
"There is the indigo blue dress that Elisabeth Kopp [the first woman appointed to the Federal Council] wore during her oath-taking at the Federal Palace in 1984 and the photo of three young Kosovar Albanians leaning against the bonnet of a BMW. In other words, two ways of depicting the Switzerland of the last three generations. The dress, like the photograph, belongs to the collection of objects acquired and stocked by the National Museum of Zurich," writes Anne Fournier, inviting readers to visit the exhibition, ' Preview, Journey across 20th-century Switzerland'. "Which traces of a country's cultural history and moods shoud we preserve? What should be the criteria? ... We see a country spanning a century, but several angles from which to view it."

The intimacy of three Arab women
"Since Saturday, the Schlachthaus Theatre in Berne has offered an intimate space for three women, three creators from different corners of the Arab world," writes Anne Fournier. She offers a review of a work by the Jordanian Swasan Darwaza that is performed by the Algerian-born French actress Malika Khatir and is put to music by the Palestinian, Kamilya Jubran. "Their play, 'Struck by Lucidity' is the monologue of an Arab woman caught in her salon having a private tête-à-tête with her camera and her image projected off in the backdrop. At that very point where the masks come off, where taboos begin to crack. She observes herself, scrutinises herself. She seems close to a state of hypnosis, indeed excitement when she is talking about chocolate. But above all, we hear her woman's voice. At a time when misunderstandings between West and East are multiplying, this is an audacious work. It does not lay blame; it uncovers and touches with subtlety."
