Merkel feeding populist monster

People in Greece, Portugal and Spain retire too early and have too many holidays, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said this week. This is not only inaccurate but it also rocks the EU to its very foundation, laments the business daily Jornal de Negócios: "We are in the process of destroying more than five decades of peace and progress. And Europe's rich are mostly to blame. Angela Merkel's statements ... can't even be put down to the usual election campaign babble. The German chancellor is adding fuel to a dangerously smouldering fire. Her words are simply terrible. ... For even if they were true she shouldn't have voiced them because they have nothing to do with the success of the single currency. ... Feeding the populist monster that is rearing its ugly head in the Eurozone is like opening Pandora's box and reviving the spectre of Europe's past."

The state must help car industry out of the crisis

In an article for the business paper Jornal de Negócios Helena Garrido compares the current crisis with an earthquake and calls for financial aid for car makers: "After an earthquake people don't start discussing how many millions should be invested to save the survivors and bury the dead. We are currently experiencing an economic and financial earthquake, the consequences of which affect society as a whole. Tax money must be used to save people. ... The question is whether the state, or in other words, we taxpayers, should also ... help other branches. It makes no sense to rush to the aid of each little business with taxpayers' money. But the car industry presents a problem for society. The insolvency of car factories in the US and Europe has the same impact as the financial earthquake. ... These are special cases that require unusual measures. After these measures have been taken the free market should be restored as soon as possible once more."

Saddam Hussein's death sentence

The editorialist Helena Garrido reacts to the death sentence given to the former dictator Saddam Hussein on Sunday, November 5th, by the High Court of Criminal Justice in Iraq. "It is lamentable seeing a country like the United Kingdom -a historical symbol of democracy-, pat itself on the back, via its Foreign Secretary, for the decision made by Iraq's high court without condemning, in the least, the death sentence. We all condemned the atrocities committed by Saddam Hussein's regime. But no European can take pride in this parody of justice and the sentences pronounced. Defence attorneys assassinated, destitute judges, terrified witnesses and a court dependent on political power in a context of war, these were the circumstances in which the eight accused were judged. Can there be anyone in the realm of those countries that consider themselves defenders of a State of justice, who considers this judgement just?"

The Portuguese lack financial education

"Major debt is claiming more and more victims" warns the editorialist Helena Garrido, who is concerned about the financial situation of the Portuguese. "Since the interest rates started to go down at the end of the 1990s provoking consumerist euphoria, famillies and businesses have been alerted to the risks of severe indebtedness. The portuguese have never been acustomed to decision making in the management of their personal fincances, quite simply because nothing could be decided. During the dictatorship and the fifteen years that followed the revolution, a large part of the economy was reglemented. ... Individual freedom in matters of financial choice, suddenly applied in a country marked by exacerbated paternalism, inevitably creates problems. ... Today there is still time to act. It will suffice to seriously invest in the financial education of the Portuguese, through information campains and interventions in schools."

E.ON offer a test for Europe

"The German group E.ON's buyout bid for Spain's Endesa represents a wonderful test for Europe," writes Helena Garrido, the daily's deputy editor. "With E.ON's offer, those involved in building Europe, Spain and France in particular, are going to face a true test of the sincerity of their convictions on the common market. We will see if their actions match their fine words. The French will have to accept seeing Europe's number-two energy company, behind their dear EDF, overtake the latter. The Spanish will have an opportunity to dispel all the doubts about their protectionist inclinations ... The German bid is much more than a financial operation, because it could finally make Europe a key player on the global energy stage."
