Superpower China

China will be the world's largest centre of science and research by 2020, according to information company Thomson Reuters. This is a further indication that China is destined to become the new superpower, the conservative daily Rzeczpospolita writes: "This is the impact of a deliberate policy Beijing has been pursuing for years. Its core element is to convince Chinese scientists to return home. Three weeks ago the New York Times told the story of Shi Yigong, who was once the US's star in microbiology and led his own laboratory in Princeton. After 18 years in the US Shi has decided to return to China. He was lured by the excellent conditions and the prospect of being able to do something for his country. The story of Shi and the Reuters analysis are pieces in a puzzle which is clearly becoming complete: In our eyes the emphasis - economic, political, technological and even cultural - is shifting from West to East."

The future of Nato at stake

Piotr Gillert writes in the conservative daily Rzeczpospolita that Nato's future depends on the outcome of the Afghan conflict: "'We will withdraw from Iraq and concentrate on Afghanistan', Barack Obama repeatedly stated during his election campaign. And now he is acting on his promise. A few days ago the American army withdrew from the cities of Iraq and turned power over to the local authorities. Yesterday [Thursday] they then launched one of the biggest offensives in Afghanistan since the invasion started eight years ago. Thousands of marines penetrated into Helmand Province - until now one of the Taliban's major strongholds. In the end the success of the Afghan conflict will depend on this operation. And because in Afghanistan the fate of Nato is also hanging in the balance, it too depends on the current offensive."

The US missile defence system in Poland

The question of whether to participate in the US's missile defence system is still under debate in Poland. Talking to Piotr Gillert, security expert Bartlomiej Sienkiewicz warns that Poles should not expect too much: "We should participate in the project, especially as I fear NATO may no longer exist a couple of years from now. But the missile defence shield is not a miracle cure for our fear of Russia and will not guarantee absolute protection. The only way to achieve greater political security and reduce the risk of conflict in Europe is through Berlin. As long as German foreign policy corresponds with American foreign policy, we have nothing to fear. But whether this will continue to be the case is questionable. Gerhard Schröder demonstrated how little it takes to change this. It would be a great mistake on the part of our government to rely solely on an alliance with the US and its missile defence system. Berlin is just as important to our security as the presence of the Americans in Poland."
