Mikhail Gorbachev on politics and climate change

On the occasion of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, the former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev criticises the lackadaisical attitude of politicians to climate change in the online portal Komment.hu: "Excuses and pretexts for not taking action on the environment, and assertions that there are more important problems, are simply no longer credible. If we fail on this problem, we'll fail on all the others. ... The latest scientific research on climate change is extremely disturbing. We have a real emergency. Yet the gap between science and policy keeps widening. ... Why is this happening? For several reasons, including the inertia of the existing economic model, one based on hyperprofits and excessive consumption; political and business leaders' failure to think long term; and concern that reducing carbon emissions will undercut economic growth."

Mikhail Gorbachev on Europe's poor relations with Russia

The EU must offer a future to all the countries of Europe including Russia, writes the former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in the left-liberal Frankfurter Rundschau: "The current model of EU relations with other European countries is based on absorbing as many of them as quickly as possible while leaving the relationship with Russia a "pending matter". ...Is this reluctance a sign of unwillingness to accept, and take part in, Russia's resurgence? ... Too many European politicians do not want a level playing field with Russia. They want one side to be a teacher or prosecutor and the other, Russia, to be a student or defendant. Russia will not accept this model. It wants to be understood; simply put, it wants to be treated as an equal partner. Rising to the historic challenges of security, economic recovery, the environment and migration requires a redesign of global and, most importantly, European political and economic relations."

Gorbachev on Russian interests

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev defends Russia's action in The Guardian: "Russia had to respond. To accuse it of aggression against 'small, defenceless Georgia' is not just hypocritical but shows a lack of humanity. ... By declaring the Caucasus, a region that is thousands of miles from the American continent, a sphere of its 'national interest', the US made a serious blunder. Of course, peace in the Caucasus is in everyone's interest. But it is simply common sense to recognise that Russia is rooted there by common geography and centuries of history. Russia is not seeking territorial expansion, but it has legitimate interests in this region. ... The international community's long-term aim could be to create a sub-regional system of security and cooperation that would make any provocation, and the very possibility of crises such as this one, impossible. Building this type of system would be challenging and could only be accomplished with the cooperation of the region's countries themselves. Nations outside the region could perhaps help, too - but only if they take a fair and objective stance."
