Let's not forget the fun

Arthur Grosjean argues that fun should not be forgotten during the Euro 2008 football championship: "Trix and Flix are the strange names given to the two Euro 2008 mascots. ... Critics were quick to rename them Flic and Fric: Cops and Cash. ... These days money and security are on everyone's lips. Is the UEFA championship just a huge money machine that will spit out billions? Will a wave of Hooligans descend on peaceful Switzerland? These questions are certainly justified, but there is more to the event than that. Because for football fans, the European Championship that starts on Saturday is first and foremost a cause for joy. It is pure bliss to watch games featuring some of the world's best players night after night. ... And the championship is an exceptional event for Geneva. ... We will have to wait at least another 50 years before it comes back to our canton. So let's enjoy the moment while it lasts."

The Swiss populist Blocher sent to the opposition

The daily's editor-in-chief, Arthur Grosjean, worries that "Switzerland's most despised political beast isn't dead. Beaten Wednesday by a group of hunters from the socialist, christian democrat and Green camps, he was resurrected Thursday morning, sized-up his adversaries, and cried vengeance. For those who heard Christoph Blocher speak in front of the Federal Assembly yesterday, there is no doubt. There will be blood during the coming years because this politician who hails from Zurich promised to reveal the 'dirt that we hide in the name of government secrecy'. After having spent four years in government, he returns to opposition with more power to disturb things than he had before. ... The results of this episode: Switzerland will not be able to 'normalise' Blocher. His supporters have made him a god; his opponents, a devil. ... Let's hope that at least this circus serves to engage the electorate of all stripes in Swiss politics."

Nicolas Sarkozy's flying diplomacy

On November 4th, French President Nicolas Sarkozy took three French journalists and four Spanish air hostesses out of Chad once they were released by the local justice system in relation to the Zoe's Ark affair. He "once again donned his blue suit brandishing 'S' for superman and flew to the rescue of Europeans caught up in the judicial web of an African country", writes Arthur Grosjean, assistant Editor in chief of the daily. "He attracted the European limelight by playing gentleman with a plane that did a little detour via Spain to drop off the air hostesses. Should this flying diplomacy be applauded? The families of hostages will applaud and we can understand hem. Public opinion will also let itself be seduced at first. But very soon a brutal question will be asked: what price did Sarkozy pay in Chad to play saviour?"

Swiss company establishes quota system for foreign workers

Arthur Grosjean considers that the decision made by Migros, a prominent brand name, to limit its number of foreign employees is breaking a Swiss taboo. "By establishing a quota of 10% employment of foreign workers and publicly defending it, Migros in Geneva has thrown a nice big brick into the political quagmire. And the consequences are immediately apparent. Henceforth, a majority of parties, especially on the right, are declaring unemployed from Geneva a priority over workers arriving from neighbouring France. ... This attitude has now been accepted by the majority of the right. This is surprising, in so much as the liberal credo rather tends to attach importance to the competence of workers regardless of where they come from. Why this change? Because unemployment is diminishing slowly in Geneva, while the economy booms."
