Ryanair blackmailing Latvia
The Irish budget airline Ryanair has announced it will invest 140 million US dollars in a new hub in the Lithuanian city of Kaunas instead of in the Latvian capital Riga. The Internet paper Diena adds its voice to the expressions of disapproval in Latvia: "Former transportation minister Ainārs Šlesers has gone so far as to accuse the current government of illiteracy and damaging the interests of Latvia. In the underworld what Ryanair is doing is called blackmail. Well aware of the drawing power of its logo it is placing exhorbitant demands on the airports in question: namely a new infrastructure, discounts, money for advertising and much more. In plain language: you need us, and not the other way round. And yet the conditions at Riga Airport were no different last year than they are now. ... But Ryanair remains in Riga and is even boosting the number of flights, and you don't do something like that in a location that's devoid of prospects."

Latvia concerned about Portuguese naivete
Sanita Jemberga stresses that in addition to all the other issues on the agenda for the Portuguese EU presidency, it should also make efforts to improve relations with Russia. However, she has strong doubts about its chances of success: "Portugal's prime minister is a fan of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. He has already announced that he doesn't intend to pursue a hard line with Moscow. Nor does he share the view that Russia needs to be put under pressure. The experiences of the EU have shown that the further south a country is, the less it knows about Russia and the more romantic its attitude towards the country... Latvia's diplomats will just have to intone the old adage: protect me from my friends; I can handle my enemies."

The EU's new treaty
Sanita Jemberga is delighted that a compromise was reached in Brussels, but harshly criticises Poland and Great Britain. "Poland's behaviour has made things more difficult for the other new EU member states, because we're frequently regarded as forming one homogenous block. Our joints efforts to make ourselves heard as the voice of formerly occupied states are hindered when such absurd arguments are brought into play that everyone would like to block their ears as soon as the World War is mentioned. But worst of all is Poland and England's absolute arrogance regarding the common interests of the EU."
