Poland's nurses strike for lost cause
In protest at the introduction of more flexible forms of employment in the country's healthcare system five Polish nurses began an indefinite hunger strike in parliament on Tuesday. Under a new law, hospitals may employ nursing staff on the basis of a civil law contract without offering them protection against dismissal. The protest have no chance of success in the long term, writes the conservative daily Rzeczpospolita "because the government is clearly and deliberately violating the constitution. Six years ago the Constitutional Court delivered the following assessment: employing nurses on a regular employment contract basis discriminates against this group of staff when at the same time doctors are allowed to work on the basis of a civil law employment contract. This allows the government to do a trick: They fulfil the nurses' demands with a new law and then wait until the Constitutional Court calls it into question again."

Spying charges against the new Archbishop of Warsaw
On Sunday, Stanislaw Wielgus is to take over the position of Archbishop of Warsaw from Józef Cardinal Glemp. This week, numerous media outlets have published the old secret service files on Wielgus that are housed at the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN). It turns out that for years, Wielgus spied on his fellow clergy as an informant for the communist secret service. Wielgus, until now Bishop of Plock, has denied the charges. The newspaper's editor in chief Robert Krasowski comments: "It will be a moral scandal if Wiegus becomes Archbishop... And to hold the inauguration at this moment in time, just a few days after his past has been revealed, will look like a special award for his lies and his services as informant. This is not about lustration. It is about principles."
