Europeans ignore conflict in Ivory Coast

The daily La Voix du Luxembourg accuses the European states of sitting back and doing nothing while groups in the West African state Ivory Coast continue to arm themselves: "The genocide that could occur in Ivory Coast is symptomatic of a disgraceful cynicism on the part of the Western countries, caught between their desire to champion human rights and the interests of their industrial companies. The Bidjan [tribe], armed by three neighbouring states that prefer to turn a blind eye, could find themselves confronted in the weeks and months to come by some Ebrié who have themselves been armed by the regime. If ever that should happen the Europeans, especially the grand defenders of global injustice, will have been warned. Like the three wise monkeys, they see nothing, hear nothing and say nothing. The recipe for happiness astride a bed of corpses."

Ousting of Czech premier is irresponsible

The daily La Voix du Luxembourg comments on the vote of no confidence that led to the downfall of Czech Premier Mirek Topolánek: "Showing the Czech government and the EU Presidency the door in the middle of the financial crisis has discredited Czech diplomacy's entire strategy and perhaps also the country's image for a good while to come. ... Ousting Topolánek in the middle of the EU Presidency means judging a government on the basis of a situation that no one can really explain properly. But it also means that the gravity of the problem and the necessity of sticking together have not been understood. It is more a question of irresponsibility than of euro-scepticism. ... The social democratic opposition in the Czech Republic announced yesterday ... that it could imagine holding new elections early, although not until 2010. ... And that only in order to give Topolánek's popularity ratings - which have received a new boost since the beginning of the presidency - time to fall again."

More green cars for the EU

The daily La Voix du Luxembourg calls on the EU to adopt a new course in its policy on the automotive industry: "It would show real political courage to profit from the current crisis [in the automotive industry] by making modern [low-emissions] cars accessible to as many people as possible. Time is running out - particularly since the French EU presidency will be followed by the Czechs, who are more Eurosceptic. ... A third of the cars produced worldwide are made in Europe by 12 million people. This makes the car industry a key industry. The crisis in this sector, which stems partly from consumers' concern, is only being aggravated by the ongoing European debate about carbon emissions limits for new models. We must act today. ... The industry is ready. From now on it must move forwards without looking too often in the rear-view mirror."

European ideals sacrificed for heating

Owing to the presence of Russian troops in Georgia the EU had temporarily broken off its talks with Russia. Now the negotiations are to be resumed, among other things to ward off the threat of Russian energy supplies to Europe being cut off. The daily La Voix du Luxembourg criticises Europe's bowing to Russian pressure in the gas dispute: "The first taste of winter cold has sufficed to make Europeans put on their woolly hats, cover their faces with scarves - and give in to Russia. They didn't want to risk the gas tap being turned off. But if we sacrifice European ideals for the sake of keeping ourselves warm it will be difficult to intervene in the Congo and justify the arrest of a top aide to Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Germany ... or to cite international law as justification for future interventions."

Will the ETA follow the path taken by the IRA?

"Has the ETA [Basque separatist movement] wanted to imitate the IRA [Irish Republican Army], who, at a time when the political process was stuck, committed a bomb attack in the heart of London on February 9th, 1994, in order to twist the arm of the British Government?", wonders the editorialist Thierry Labro after the lethal attack perpetrated in Madrid last December 30th. "The point of view of the terrorists has yet to be communicated, but one thing is sure: by being forced to announce the freezing of the process, the Spanish Prime Minister actually brought it to a definite stand-still that will be difficult to go back on. ... Mr. Zapatero has little time and even less room to organise a vast, informed action plan - a political one - in order to isolate the ETA and demonstrate that the terrorist's theses do not stand a chance of triumphing. It is precisely at this point that the IRA put down its arms and was dissolved. There is hope yet."
