The brutality of imprisonment
The Guatemalan artist Régina José Galindo is presenting an installation performance in Paris based on her recent experience of voluntary imprisonment. Her impressions of this experience - in written, video and graphic form - are on exhibit at the Plateau, a Parisian space for experimental art. "I was in Italy during the crisis of the suburbs [in France], and I noticed that, as usual, the authorities reacted by using the weapon of fear to reduce anger to silence. I come from Guatemala, a country that has been at war for a long time, so I am very familiar with words like 'curfew'. (...) I therefore built my own interpretation of 'curfew': what happens to a human being when he is deprived of freedom? I had myself locked up for ten days (...) I had a hard time dealing with this imprisonment."
