Sarkozy's Europe policy disregards the people

Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti on Tuesday distanced himself from the German and French conceptions of European policy. And it's a good thing, too, writes the left-liberal daily Le Monde: "Sarkozy would like to realise the old French dream of a political union concentrated around the euro and led by the European heads of state and government. But such a French Europe does not tally with Merkel's democratic, federal Europe, nor with Monti's liberal one. ... Reducing the Eurozone to deliberations behind closed doors by its leaders runs the risk of provoking a popular revolt: the people fear that France and Germany will have all the say along with the markets, while the governments of the south collapse one after another. Berlin and Rome will not be the only ones to say no to Sarkozy. His neo-Gaullist regression may reconcile the French with Europe during election time, but it will not be accepted by Europe."

Nicolas Sarkozy's European plans

"Mr. Sarkozy's talk concerning the European Community along with his talk on outsourcing and against the ECB means that we may rightly fear French isolationism", worries Arnaud Leparmentier, chief editor of the Europe and France section of the daily. "As for the creation of a fortified European stronghold, this is an anachronistic idea in a world where China and India are emerging. ... Europe can move away from a certain internationalist naivety by seeking foremost to defend its legitimate interests. Some paths are worth exploring: the taxation of imports from countries that don't respect Kyoto protocol; the introduction, like in Germany, of a social VAT that imposes a social security contribution on imports; a firmer management of the euro facing the dollar. For this, however, Sarkozy needs to convince his partners that he is not motivated by nationalist interests."
