Bali, one step forward for the climate?
Fabio Lo Verso takes stock of the Bali conference. "In the absence of sincere and conclusive adherence to Kyoto guidelines, China, Russia and India have at least learnt to speak an 'ecologically correct language'. This is the mark of consensus in Bali, a sort of a la carte compromise: each country will be able to adopt the scenario that most suits it providing it multiplies declarations and brandishes its faith in the climate change struggle. More ambitious decisions will be made later, in Copenhagen, in 2009 [Where and when a UN conference will be held and a new treaty on climate change is due to be adopted]. Thus Bali has deliberately distanced the rigidity of Kyoto to soften-up the positions of the more reluctant. By joining this movement at the last minute, Washington has taken an unexpected turn, six years after having tried to sink the Kyoto protocol."

Can Nicolas Sarkozy reform France?
"The opportunity to modernise French politics, at least in appearance, by electing a woman was too good to be true. But Nicolas swept it aside with a score of 53 %. Jacques Chirac's successor will seek to prove that he is able to 'break away' from the style of his political father who has been stuck in a distant and sterile presidency for twelve years in a row. So far, however, the candidate Sarkozy has only had to feint novelty before having to actually walk his talk", explains Fabio Lo Verso, who has serious doubts about the victor's actual will to reform France. "Nicolas Sarkozy called for 'rupture' throughout his campaign. The France he is preparing to forge is a narrow-minded, arrogant, pedantic France, foolhardy towards it's reduction of social security and haunted by an obsession with security that he is preparing to forge, perfectly in line with his predecessor."
