The troubling gains of Italy's Northern League
Andrea Manzella worries that the Northern League's victory puts Italy's unity in danger. "It was a great victory for the Northern League [in the April 13th and 14th legislative elections]. Its votes were decisive for the majority, as much in the Senate as in the Chamber of Deputies. This result is objectively worrying for 'House of Italy'. Not only for its operation starting tomorrow, but also for the reinforcement of its supporting walls, its joints. ... The worry comes from the fact that the winning coalition is controlled by the voters that want to see the defeat of the unified state. ... The European Union looks favourably on regionalism based on the principle of economic and social cohesion, which is contrary to the principle of regional separation, where border lines are necessarily drawn by the richest regions."

Finland attempts to pull along the European Union
"The reindeer pulling Europe", this is how Finland is qualified by the Italian European Member of Parliament Andrea Manzella, member of the parliamentary group the European Socialist Party. He ponders the Finnish parliament's ratification last week of the European Constitution Treaty and sees in this little country a model for the other nations. "What is the significance of this Finnish ratification? At the end of the pause for reflection decreed by the European Union after the lost referendums [The French and Dutch voted 'no' to the constitution in 2005], the Finnish ratification smacks of a provocation. Only a little state with serious success and a sense of responsibility like Finland could get away with it".
